(Atlantic) The Class 1A Region 1 girls wrestling tournament held Friday night in Atlantic showcased the depth of talent across Southwest Iowa, with area teams turning in strong performances and sending a talented contingent of qualifiers on to next week’s Girls State Wrestling Tournament in Coralville.
SWAT and Woodward-Granger led the way, each advancing four wrestlers to state. Woodward-Granger crowned one regional champion as Hannah Brandhorst captured the title at 120 pounds. The Hawks also added three runners-up in Grace Sharr (130), Sunshine Casey (135), and Katelyn Brandhorst (140).
SWAT matched that output with four qualifiers and one champion. Megan Gerlock powered her way to the regional title at 190 pounds, while Nadia South (105), Bailey Lillard (145), and Stella Beattie (170) all finished as runners-up to earn state berths.
Riverside had an impressive night, producing three regional champions. Jersey Hilgenberg claimed gold at 100 pounds, Hailey Harvey won the 115-pound title, and Mckenna Dorr topped the field at 145.
Clarinda also qualified three wrestlers, led by regional champion Lily Weinreich at 135 pounds. Kylar Downey placed second at 125, and Aliyah Payne finished runner-up at 235.
The host school, Atlantic, will send two wrestlers to the state meet. Haley Armstrong captured the regional championship at 235 pounds, while Cadence Kinzie earned a runner-up finish at 115.
Audubon qualified two wrestlers as well, with Macy Rasmussen winning the 110-pound championship and Jordan Mulford finishing second at 100.
West Central Valley advanced one wrestler to state, as Willow Ray claimed the regional title at 130 pounds.
Missouri Valley will be represented by three qualifiers. Madi McCall earned a championship at 125 pounds, while Lexa Vinsonhaler (110) and Rylie Marcum (155) each placed second.
Logan-Magnolia also sent three wrestlers through, highlighted by regional championships from Teagan Carritt at 140 and Mary Bowman at 170. Gracyn Stone added a runner-up finish at 120.
Western Iowa qualified two wrestlers, with Marlee Pittet winning the 155-pound title and Claire Schumacher finishing runner-up at 190.
ATU rounded out the qualifiers with Sophia Hazen, who captured the regional championship at 105 pounds.
With champions crowned and state spots secured, Southwest Iowa will be well represented when the Girls State Wrestling Tournament begins next week in Coralville.
