(Des Moines) The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning for a portion of southwest Iowa and all of west central Iowa until 11:00 p.m. tonight.
For the High Wind Warning, west winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected.
Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 40 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive.
The area counties under the High Wind Warning include Pottawattamie, Cass, Adair, Madison, Guthrie, Audubon, Shelby, Harrison, Crawford, and Carroll.
The counties under a Wind Advisory include Mills, Montgomery, Adams, Union, Taylor, Page, and Fremont. Forecasters are calling for westerly winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts near 50 mph. The Wind Advisory is in effect until 8:00 p.m. this evening.
