(Waterloo, IA) — A Waterloo family is mourning a third child who died in a crash in Kenya. The family was visiting the country on vacation when the car crash occurred. Two boys, Emmanuel DeLeon and Kairu Winkelpleck, were pronounced dead shortly after the crash. Their older sister, Njeri DeLeon, was initially hospitalized but died on Friday, according to family friends. The crash happened on January 4th on a highway near Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi.
Sioux City Police, Fire Departments Make Pitches For Funding
(Sioux City, IA) — The Sioux City Police and Fire Departments are vying for funding from the City Council. Council members met with department heads on Friday to outline expenditures in its 2027 fiscal budget. The city is divvying up more than 96-million dollars through its Capital Improvement Program, beginning on July 1st. The fire department is asking for newer trucks and renovations to one of its fire stations while the police department is asking for a second tactical vehicle. A finalized budget is expected to be approved by the council on April 13th.
Des Moines Free Gas Giveaway Attracts Hundreds
(Des Moines, IA) — Hundreds of Iowans are celebrating after receiving free gas on Sunday. The Fueling Hope Gas Giveaway event, hosted by Iowa State Representative Rob Johnson, gave away about 30-thousand dollars worth of gas at the Kwik Star on Northeast 14th Street in Des Moines. The annual event was started in 2022 and is held on the weekend before Martin Luther King Jr. Day. An event featuring guest speakers and musical performances was held on Saturday at the New Beginning Church on East Euclid Street. Johnson says the goal of the event is to make the community stronger by bringing people together.
Garage Fire In Des Moines Reignites Hours Later
(Des Moines, IA) — Officials are investigating why a Des Moines garage fire reignited hours after it was extinguished. The first fire happened on the 11-hundred block of 22nd Street on Saturday night. The garage owner says firefighters were there until 11 p.m. and left when the blaze was put out. He said neighbors called on Sunday morning to say the garage was on fire again. The owner said he lost all of his wedding equipment in the blaze.
Iowa-Based Salsa Company Sues Manufacturer For Exploding Bottles
(Des Moines, IA) — Lola’s Fine Sauces of West Des Moines is suing a company over exploding bottles. Lola’s alleges Ecoideas breached their contract by failing to prepare their product properly. Complaints of salsa that bubbled, fermented and exploded forced Lola’s to incur hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages since their agreement in 2023. Ecoideas had promised to provide one million units that met Lola’s production standards. Lola’s is suing the company for 700-thousand dollars.
