(Atlantic) Three years ago, a group of Atlantic residents began exploring the community’s growing need for housing. Their efforts followed an Iowa State University housing study funded by the City of Atlantic. From those early conversations, a group now known as Vision Atlantic emerged to identify land and launch a housing development project.
According to Vision Atlantic President Christina Bateman, when land later became available, the City of Atlantic stepped in to assist, allowing the group to begin developing a plan.
Initially, the project was much smaller—about one-fourth of what is now planned for the Camblin Hills Housing Development. In August 2022, Vision Atlantic formally became a nonprofit organization. The group then met with Steve Wild, President of the Charles E. Lakin Foundation, initially seeking an infrastructure grant.
Bateman says those conversations led to a much larger opportunity. After discussions with the foundation, Wild informed Vision Atlantic that the Lakin Foundation was willing to invest up to $23 million into the housing development project.
Bateman says that once the Lakin Foundation made its significant commitment, the local community quickly recognized the project as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Community members stepped up with both financial support and volunteer time. Currently, between 65 and 75 volunteers are contributing their efforts to the project.
Looking ahead to 2026, Vision Atlantic has secured 80 percent of the funding needed to expand the YMCA and build a new 300-capacity childcare facility. At the same time, the housing development—now fully financed—is taking shape. Two condominiums are under construction, with foundations poured for five additional buildings at the top of the development. Two tiny homes have been framed, with work on a third beginning. Construction on single-family homes is expected to start in January.
Fundraising efforts will continue with the goal of reaching 100 percent, or $39 million, by the end of 2026. Bateman says anyone interested in donating or supporting the project can contact her or any Vision Atlantic committee member.
