(Ames, IA) — Iowa St. players on Sunday elected to not play in a post-season football bowl game and will be fined by the Big 12 Conference.
According to multiple media reports, members of the athletics administrative team met with the Cyclone players on Sunday morning and had an open conversation about playing in a bowl game. After the meeting was over, the players voted not to play in a bowl game due to the lack of healthy players to safely practice and play.
The Big 12 has announced that it will fine any school that fails to participate in a bowl game that is eligible $500,000. Kansas St. has also elected to not play in a game. The Big 12 does have contracts with bowl games and will not be able to fill its available slots for those games. Teams that are 5-7 will now be eligible to play in a post season bowl game. Unrelated to the Big 12, Notre Dame has decided not to play in a post season bowl game after they were left out of the college football playoff.
Both Iowa St. and Kansas St. are going through coaching changes — Matt Campbell has left Iowa St. to go to Penn St. with Washington St.’s Jimmy Rogers named the new Head Coach of the Cyclones and Wildcats Chris Klieman has announced his retirement with former KSU player Collin Klein named the new Head Coach.
Rogers will not be coaching Washington St. when they play Utah St. in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
