(Harlan, IA) — The Dean Mosher era started with a dominating victory as Harlan swept Shenandoah in a Little Hawkeye DH on Thursday night.
The Cyclone girls held on to a tight 39-38 victory while the Harlan boys ran away from the Mustangs winning 68-42.
The girls game was marred by turnovers by both teams. The Fillies used a full court press that held Harlan to just 3-22 shooting in the first half but for some reason did not use it in the 2nd half. Leading 37-32 late, the Cyclones made the mistake of fouling Kalyn Scanman while shooting a three pointer and she converted all three foul shots. Harlan was only 4-15 from the line in the game but two of those made foul shots came from Brinley Van Baale with 7 seconds left to give the Cyclones a 39-35 lead. Ava O’Rourke hit a miraculous three pointer with .7 seconds left to cut the lead to 1 but Harlan ran out the clock to finish the win.
Van Baale led Harlan with 10 points; Kenzley Bruck added 8 and Aubree Wegner finished with 7 points. Shenandoah was led by Scanman with 13 but she had averaged 29.5 coming into the night. It was the first win of the season for Harlan going to 1-2 while the Fillies suffered their first loss at 2-1.
The Harlan boys stormed out in front with a 13-0 run to start the game, led 39-20 at the half and after the Mustangs cut the lead to single digits, the Cyclones went on another 13-0 run to push the lead to 20 and won easily.
Dallas McDowell led Harlan (1-0) with 26 points; Kobe Klaassen had 17. Joe O’Rourke and Carter Sells each had 9 for Shenandoah (0-2).
