(Harlan, IA) — The Harlan boys wrestling team will have a young team when they take the mat for the first time this Saturday. The Cyclones lost 5 seniors including experienced leaders Spencer Fink, Jesse Jens and Brody McKinley. There are only two seniors on this year’s team Jaden Stephens (27-24) and Nick Gubbels (18-13).
Junior Brody Bendorf (25-11) and Junior Chayton Snethen (36-23) both went to the state tournament a year ago but did not get a win — Bendorf will start the season on the shelf with some back issues but Head Coach Adam Bendorf is anxious to see what Snethen can do
Junior Nathan Sandquist (36-11) was among Harlan’s win leaders last year but lost in districts and Bendorf expects that to change this season
Bendorf will be looking at improvement from other wrestlers like Junior Jaysin Ludwig (25-28), Junior Keagan Madden (11-18), Sophomore Benjamin Gray (22-28), Sophomore Jamison Clark (26-28) and a handful of freshmen will see time on the mat as well plus Junior Jaspyr Nielsen at heavyweight
Harlan will host the Dan Hill Invitational to open the season this Saturday — other teams competing there include Audubon, Denison Schleswig, East Union, Glenwood, Lenox, Logan Magnolia, Panorama, West Central Valley, Westwood, and Winterset.
