(Washington D.C.) November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Senator Chuck Grassley used his floor remarks on Wednesday to raise awareness. He said one in 18 people receive a lung cancer diagnosis during their lifetime. Twelve percent of diagnoses have had no tobacco exposure.
The American Cancer Society says lung cancer screening could save 62-thousand lives over five years. Their study was published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Screening is fairly simple and is done with a CT scan but, apparently, only 18-percent of people eligible to get screened are doing so. The ACS says to qualify you must be 50 to 80-years-old and have a history of smoking two packs of cigarettes a day for 20 years.
