Robert Deane Sornson, the son of Raymond and Mayme (Peterson) Sornson, was born near Exira Iowa on November 20, 1929, and passed away peacefully into glory at the Friendship Home in Audubon on November 3, 2025, at 95 years of age. He was surrounded by his family and nearby were his Friendship Home and Hospice of the Midwest caregivers, who had so lovingly taken care of him. When Bob was seven, his father died which greatly impacted his life as he became a father figure to his three younger siblings. As a youth he attended Sharon #7 school and then graduated from Viola School in 1948. Bob was a faithful member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.
On January 29, 1950, Bob was united in marriage to Elaine Marie Mumgaard; they were blessed with 67 years of marriage before Elaine passed away in 2017. Four children were born to complete their family. He was dearly loved by his family. Bob and Elaine lived on their farm just north of Viola Center where they raised grain, livestock, and had a large poultry operation. In 1977, Bob and Elaine sold their farm and moved into Audubon. After farming, he then owned an auto dealership, ran an orchard, worked several years at Roberts Rural Supply, and spent many years (into his late 80s) with carpentry, tiling, and handyman work.
Serving at church and in the community were important parts of Bob’s life and brought him joy. He was a member of the Masons and Shriners. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, and fishing trips to Canada with family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Elaine, brothers Chuck and first wife Rilla Sornson, John Sornson, and sister Louise and husband Don Chehak.
Survivors include his children Judy (Richard) Baker, Paul (Deb) Sornson, Greg Sornson, and Jane (Robert) Weber. His grandchildren Chris (Erika) Baker, Jill (Preston) Kurtz, Eric (Megan) Sornson, Amy (Tim) Pile, Megan (Chris) Modl, Rachel (Chad) Strong, Laney Sornson, Ryan Weber, Alex Weber, Jacob Weber, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, sisters-in-law Kathy Sornson and Lou Ann Sornson, and many nieces and nephews and great friends.
Memorials may be directed to the Friendship Home or to Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church; mailed to the Schmidt Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 201, Audubon, IA 50025.
