(Audubon, IA) — Audubon will likely host its final game of the 2025 football season as they take on Montezuma in the round of 16, coverage on KSOM.
The Wheelers have put some astounding numbers on the scoreboard this season — 88 touchdowns which leads the entire state, 62 rushing touchdowns which leads the entire state, 4,633 all purpose yards which is 2nd in 8 man behind Easton Valley, Audubon quarterbacks have a passer rating of 306.4 (14 of their 36 completed passes have gone for touchdowns). All of this with Audubon losing its starting quarterback Carson Wessel who even when healthy has not been able to get his job back from Aiden Kjergaard. Wessel got hurt again in practice two weeks ago and Head Coach Sean Birks hopes he will be available to play either offense or defense this week
Montezuma has a balanced offense but they run slightly more than they pass — 2000 yards rushing and 1,635 passing. If the Braves run to run up the gut, they will run into a road block in Nose Guard Izik Sorensen who has 22 tackles which is a lot for a nose guard. Birks says he stole the show on the film last week in the first round over Lenox
The Braves are led by Senior QB Brady Boulton who has thrown for 1,556 yards, 29 TD and 8 INT. His QB rating is 215.9. He has also run for 395 yards and 9 TD. Birks says he is an undersized tough kid who knows how to make plays in a variety of ways
Montezuma’s RB is Senior Broox Stockman who has 913 yards rushing, 13 TD and averaging 7 yards a carry. He is also quite effective in the passing game with 24 catches for 466 yards and 8 TD. Birks says Stockman will run routes towards the sideline and then turn up field
If Audubon wins this week and Iowa Valley beats Janesville than the Wheelers go on the road for the next round so this could be the final home game for the Wheelers.
Montezuma beat East Union 46-28 in the first round — the Braves have lost this season to Iowa Valley and Southeast Warren. Last year, Boulton threw for more yards but less touchdowns. Monte Head Coach John Beck says he has developing his passing game from last year
Up front, Montezuma had Blake Smith at Left Guard (255 pound Senior) Center Isaac Wedgewood (245 pound Senior) and Right Guard Braxton Plants (225 pound Senior). Those guys will have to move Hayden Larsen, Brody Weber and Sorensen which not a lot teams have been able to do. Beck says that Audubon is physical
Beck says that Audubon is a threat to score every time they touch the ball
These two teams met in the 2021 playoffs and Audubon won 63-14. Montezuma has been to the playoffs the last 6 seasons in a row. the Wheelers 13 of their last 14 seasons. Beck says both teams have big game experience
