(Carroll) Carroll claimed the Class 3A District #6 title Friday night with a 35-7 victory over Atlantic in Carroll. The Tigers completed district play unbeaten at 5-0 and finished the regular season 6-3 overall. The Trojans, 4-1 and 6-3, head to the state playoffs as the district runner-up.
Atlantic Head Joe Brummer says the team needs to flush the loss and be ready to go to work on Monday.
Carroll struck first, taking a 7-0 lead when Gavin Holt, a 6’2″, 250-pound two-way lineman, lined up at fullback and powered into the end zone from one yard out with 8:13 remaining in the first quarter. Atlantic capitalized on a muffed punt to even the score, as Ethan McNeal capped off the ensuing drive with a touchdown to make it 7-7 with 8:33 left in the second quarter.
The Tigers extended their lead midway through the second quarter when Camden King sprinted into the end zone from three yards out, giving Carroll a 14-7 halftime advantage.
Carroll clicked off 21 unanswered points in the second half. Adam Malik powered in from three yards late in the third quarter, Kiernan Polking hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from King early in the fourth, and Malik sealed the win with a 74-yard scoring run to cap the night.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association is set to release playoff pairings for all classes at 10:00 a.m. this morning.
