(Avoca, IA) — AC/GC is hoping to win a district title in Class A, District 7 but AHSTW still has their playoff hopes still alive — the two teams meet tonight on KSOM and Western Iowa Today TV.
The Chargers are coming off a 49-6 win over Central Decatur — they are led by Joe Crawford and Brexton Schneider who have combined for 1,131 yards at about 10.5 yards a carry. They have a total of 1,830 rushing yards which is third in Class A behind Riverside and BGM. The defense has made an impact too — 44 tackles for a loss and 12 fumble recoveries on the season. Head Coach Cody Matthewson says they emphasize tackling and turnovers
There is not much recent history between AC/GC and AHSTW — they have only played 4 times, the last being in 2017 and the Vikings have won all four meetings. However, there is older history between these school districts that Matthewson remembers when he was a player at Madrid High
AHSTW is led by Drew Lee and Gatlin Gettler on offense who have a combined 776 yards rushing although Gettler missed last week’s game but will play tonight. The Vikings have thrown it a few more times than AC/GC — Dayton Osbahr has 597 yards passing, 6 TD, and 7 INT. Collin Harder is his number one target with 15 catches for 321 yards and 3 TD. Matthewson says his defense will have to ready for multiple Viking weapons
Matthewson does not want his team looking ahead to Riverside next week because AHSTW can be spoilers
AHSTW is coming off a disappointing 32-6 loss to Mount Ayr. The Vikings are tied for third place in the district with the Raiders at 2-2 and Southwest Valley is 2-3. Mount Ayr has Nodaway Valley and Southwest Valley left on their schedule and they have the tiebreaker over AHSTW. The top four teams in the district get a playoff spot but a win tonight for the Vikings would go a long way to securing a spot. Head Coach Davis Pattee says there is no secret what the Chargers are going to do
Pattee says there is no good way of simulating AC/GC’s triple option offense during practice
Gettler leads a balanced tackle chart for AHSTW with 30 tackles; Sam Sturm has 29.5 and 5 TFLs; Drew Lee is at 29.5 and 4.5 TFLs; Cash Freeman has 28.5 and 3 TFLs. Pattee says they will have to be on the same page to deal with the Chargers running attack. Pattee says last week’s score against Mt Ayr is a little deceiving — they only trailed 12-0 at the half and the defense was doing their job
AHSTW would love to get some big plays in the air — Osbahr has found five different receivers for TDs with Harder being the big play guy
#4 AC/GC is 5-0, AHSTW is 3-3, Kickoff at 7 pm, Scouting Report at 5; In the Huddle at 5:15; Pre Game at 6:30 pm, coverage on KSOM and Western Iowa Today TV.
