(Sidney) A Missouri man faces charges in Fremont County following a pursuit on Wednesday.
According to the press release, Jorge Lara, of St. Joseph, Missouri, is charged with eluding while traveling at more than 25 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, a Class D Felony.
At approximately 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8, a Deputy from the Fremont County K9 Unit attempted to pull over a red Hummer H2 near the intersection of 195th Avenue and Highway 2. Earlier that evening, the vehicle had been reported for driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 29. When the Deputy signaled for the driver to stop, the Hummer accelerated in an attempt to evade law enforcement, prompting the initiation of a pursuit. The chase continued westward toward Syracuse, Nebraska, with the Nebraska State Patrol also in pursuit. As the vehicle traveled west, it suddenly crossed the median and reversed course, heading back east toward Iowa. The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office in Nebraska then took over the pursuit, which continued along Highway 2, reaching speeds of 90 miles per hour. As the Hummer approached Nebraska City, Stop Sticks were successfully deployed by both the Nebraska State Patrol and the Nebraska City Police Department. The vehicle continued east and eventually re-entered Iowa, where Fremont County Deputies and an Iowa State Trooper once again deployed Stop Sticks. The pursuit concluded when the vehicle crashed in a construction zone located in the 2500 block of Highway 2. The driver then fled on foot but was apprehended without incident by a Mills County Deputy.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Otoe County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska City Police Department, the Nebraska State Patrol, the Nebraska State Patrol Airwing, the Iowa State Patrol and the Mills County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
It is essential to note that a criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
