(Atlantic) This past weekend was a successful one for Atlantic High School’s Speech & Debate team. Five students competed at the Iowa Forensic League (IFL) State Tournament at Simpson College, and every single one of them broke to the final round, earning well-deserved plaques! The results are as follows:
- J. Molina – 3rd in Original Oratory
- Nissa Molgaard – 3rd in Spontaneous Speaking
- Margaret McCurdy – 3rd in Dramatic Interpretation & 3rd in Program Oral Interpretation
- Alix Nath – 3rd in Humorous Interpretation & 5th in Program Oral Interpretation
- Dean Cook – 5th in Humorous Interpretation
Additionally, Alix Nath was a finalist for Student of the Year! As a team, Atlantic placed 5th overall in the Sweepstakes. “The placing showcased our strength and dedication in a highly competitive field,” stated Coach Trisha Nicewanger.
Speaking of Coach Nicewanger, she received personal milestone. She received the honor of being named the 2025 IFL Coach of the Year award, as voted upon by her peers across the state. “This recognition is truly humbling, and I am beyond excited and grateful,” said Nicewanger. ” Many tears of joy have already been shed over this incredible honor.”
The excitement continued into Friday and Saturday with our Congress students competing at the IFL State Tournament. Representing our team were Nissa Molgaard, Bailey Grieshaber, Hope Mathis, and Ean Bloomfield. Although none of them advanced to the final round, I am incredibly impressed with their hard work and preparation. The leadership shown by our seniors, Nissa and Bailey, in mentoring Hope and Ean was inspiring. I have no doubt that our younger competitors will carry this experience forward and continue to grow in Congressional Debate.
While we were making waves at IFL, Bryce Smith helped take some of our past IFL students to the 54th Annual Walnut Hill Individual Speech Tournament at CAM. Once again, Atlantic students showcased their incredible talent:
- J. Molina – 1st in Original Oratory
- Alix Nath – 3rd in Storytelling & 2nd in Prose
- Margaret McCurdy – 1st in Prose & 2nd in Literary Program
- Aubrey Welsh – Finalist (Top 6) in Acting
As a team, Atlantic secured 4th place in Sweepstakes, which is remarkable given our small but mighty team.
“This entire weekend was a testament to the hard work, talent, and passion of our students. Whether in Speech or Debate, they continue to exceed expectations and make our school proud.,” stated Coach Nicewanger. “As was said at IFL, we “do a lot with very little”—a statement we embrace with pride!”
