(Houston, TX) — New numbers from the CDC show that adult cigarette smoking is at the lowest level in six-decades. Experts say there are many reasons why.
“It’s a combination of smoke free laws, strong tobacco taxes, prevention programs in schools and cessation services to help people quit,” said Jennifer Cofer with Texas’s M-D Anderson Cancer Center.
Cofer says they’re still concerned about a spike in vaping among teenagers and young adults. “We need to have the same kind of mass media campaigns for e-cigarettes as we did for tobacco in smoking in High Schools and Elementary Schools.”
The CDC says tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States.
