(Des Moines) A new law that would make it a felony for cops who don’t comply with ICE detainer requests is being proposed. These requests are when the agency asks local police to hold someone for 48 hours after their release date while federal agents decide to take that person into custody.
Under the proposed law, Iowa law enforcement could be imprisoned or have their professional certifications taken away if they don’t cooperate with federal immigration officials. Republican State Representative Steve Hold of Crawford County said the bill is needed to ensure the safety of Iowa residents.
In other news, Governor Kim Reynolds is advancing a disaster assistance bill in the Iowa House.
The Iowa House recently passed HSB 246, which funds disaster assistance for Iowans. It also aims to protect homeowners during the insurance claim process and prevent them from being taken advantage of.
In her statement, Reynolds said Iowans across the state faced challenges due to last year’s tornadoes and floods. She said thanks to local, state, and federal partners, they can help thousands who have been displaced by the storms. Governor Reynolds added that it’s now time to follow through in their commitment to continue supporting those who need it and protecting Iowans working with insurance to rebuild their homes.
