(Des Moines) The National Weather Service in Des Moines says travel should be restricted to emergencies only this morning. This potent system will continue to affect southwest Iowa today.
Strong northwest winds will persist for much of the day, with gusts to 50-65 mph at times, before diminishing late. With snow still falling across much of the area this morning, blizzard conditions will continue until the snow gradually ends from west to east by this afternoon. Even then, the strong winds will continue to blow snow around, prolonging difficult travel conditions.
High Wind and Blizzard Warnings are in effect until noon and 3:00 p.m. today respectively.
If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle. For the latest travel conditions, check the Iowa 511 app, www.511ia.org, or dial 511.
