(Washington, DC) Iowa’s senior senator, Chuck Grassley, has been reappointed as President Pro Tempore of the U.S. Senate. The Republican senator, now 91 years old, assumes the position traditionally given to the most senior member of the majority party. Grassley previously held the role from 2019 to 2021 before Democrats gained the majority in the chamber.
As President Pro Tempore, Grassley is third in the presidential line of succession. In addition to this role, he will chair the Senate Judiciary Committee, overseeing critical duties such as reviewing judicial nominees and appointments to former President Trump’s cabinet.
The November general elections resulted in Republicans gaining a 53-47 majority in the Senate and a 220-215 majority in the House of Representatives.
In a December statement, Grassley emphasized his priorities for the upcoming session, including passing a new farm bill and promoting accountability and efficiency in the federal government.
