(Remsen, IA) — Its an 8 Man showdown with a trip to the Dome on the line as #5 Audubon visits #3 Remsen St. Mary’s, coverage on KSOM.
The Wheelers have beaten East Mills and Woodbine in the first two rounds. Last week against the Tigers, Carson Wessel carried the load with 30 carries for 145 yards and 2 TD; Aaron Olsen added 9 carries for 74 yards and another score. Head Coach Sean Birks says everything just clicked on both sides of the football
For Remsen St. Mary’s, it was a 42-8 win over West Bend Mallard and last week beat CAM 42-6. QB Landon Waldschmitt had 22 carries for 134 yards and 5 TD and Keaton Harpenau added 6 carries for 80 yards. This is not unfamiliar territory for Audubon, they have been to Remsen before with not so nice memories
The Hawks have a very efficient defense that is loaded with seniors. They only have 33 tackles for loss — that’s an average of only 3 per game while Audubon had 48 tackles for a loss — that’s nearly 5 per game. But don’t be deceived by the stats says Birks
Overall, Birks says the two teams are almost mirrors of one another and that should produce a great game
The Hawks are led by Waldschmitt with 930 yards on the ground, 29 rushing TD and is averaging 7 yards a carry, pretty high for a quarterback but Remsen St. Mary’s Head Coach Tim Osterman says it will be hard for the seniors to find big holes against the Wheelers
In a game where the two teams are equally matched, little things can go a long way. Osterman says there some mistakes last week in the win against the Cougars and they cannot happen tonight
The St. Mary’s offense all centers around Waldschmitt who has a tremendous first step and get by defenders in a flash and Osterman says he has improved tremendously in the pass game but the Hawks haven’t needed to throw it much
The Hawks start nothing but seniors and have not lost at home in 7 years. Audubon lost to Remsen 76-0 when they played back in 2022. Both teams want to go to the Dome but one will be celebrating and one will be disappointed. Osterman says his kids have prepared for moments like this.
#5 Audubon visits #3 Remsen St. Mary’s, both teams 10-0. Game time tonight is 7 pm, coverage on KSOM.
