(Atlantic) The Atlantic Elks Club will collect deer hides again this year for its’ veterans hide program.
John Lorenzen, a Fisheries Biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, appeared on the weekly DNR report on KSOM and noted that the collected hides are tanned, and leather kits are assembled. He says these kits allow a person to make things like gun cases and leather products such as wheelchair gloves. The tails are used to make fishing flies.
Lorenzen says collection boxes are behind the Elks Club in Atlantic at 411 Walnut Street. The hides can be dropped off in front of the Wiota Fire Station and at McCunn’s Specialty Firearms in Massena at the east end of their building.
The box contains instructions on who to call. That person will come and prep the hides so they do not spoil.
