(Johnston, IA) — The Iowa election security center at Camp Dodge will be up and running this coming Tuesday.
Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, at his annual press conference on election security at Camp Dodge, said, “Social Media, we try to monitor what is out there to combat misinformation, disinformation. Election Day, we’re watching more trends, we want to make sure things are going smoothly.”
Law enforcement and state leaders say they’re monitoring voter security, namely for physical and cyber attacks.
“Nine out of ten times it doesn’t happen in Iowa, but it’s better to be ready than to be responding to a problem,” said Pate.
Any issues that do arise will be monitored closely.
“They’re watching nationally, so if they see a certain type of activity going on in one part of the state versus another then we want to make sure we alert our poll workers and the people out there to watch for that,” explained Pate.
He says physical attacks, like the fires set on the West Coast, are rare in Iowa. In 2021, a live pipe bomb was found near a voting place in Ankeny. It was safely removed.
