(Atlantic) The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Derek Allen McDermott, a 38-year-old resident of Atlantic, Iowa, was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for possessing a distribution quantity of methamphetamine. According to public court documents, McDermott was found with significant amounts of methamphetamine during two traffic stops in October and December 2023.
McDermott has a criminal history that includes two prior state convictions for possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine. In addition to his prison sentence, he will serve a five-year term of supervised release after completing his time in custody, as there is no parole in the federal system.
The case was announced by U.S. Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa. It was investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa State Patrol.
