(Maryville, MO) — The opening game has arrived for NCAA Division II NW Missouri St. as the 22nd ranked Bearcats host #12 Minnesota St.
This is a pivotal season for Head Coach Rich Wright after NW Missou missed the playoffs last year after 18 consecutive seasons of qualifying for the post-season. Gone is leading rusher Jay Harris who has transferred to DI Oregon. Gone is starting QB Mike Hohensee — Wright has not yet named a starter. The Bearcats do return 9 starters on defense and they will be needed to stop a running attack led by Shen Butler Lawson who ran for nearly 1,500 yards last season and 15 TD. Wright expects a physical game against the Mavericks
Wright says its not a cliche — they must limit their turnovers and take care of the little things to meet Minnesota St.
From the area, Harlan grad Derec Weyer starts at right tackle for the Bearcats as NW Missouri St. battles Minnesota St. tonight, kickoff in Maryville, MO is 6 pm.
