(Atlantic) The Atlantic softball team enters postseason play with a lot of momentum. On Monday, the Trojans topped Red Oak 8-1 and 14-0 in a doubleheader. The pair of wins marked the eighth consecutive victory for the Trojans.
Atlantic scored eight runs on eight hits in the first game. Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann said he wasn’t too pleased with the start and credits Riley Wood’s effort in the circle.
Audio PlayerThe Trojans broke open the game with five runs in the top of the fifth, with back-to-back home runs by Lila Wiederstein and Zoey Kirchhoff. The visitors added three more runs in the sixth for the 8-1 victory.
Kirchhoff belted her eighth home run of the season. Wiederstein tagged her fourth round tripper. Wiederstein went two for four with a single and three RBI. Kirchhoff went two for three with a bases-loaded double and a home run for four runs batted in. Wood allowed one run on three hits, five strikeouts, and one walk in seven innings.
The Trojans carried the momentum into the second game, scoring four runs in the first and two in the second, then eight runs in the third inning to seal the deal 14-0 in three innings.
Audio PlayerZoey Kirchhoff brought her hot bat into game two with a perfect 3-3 at the plate, two singles, a double, and four RBI. The sophomore scored one run and stole a base. Makenna Schroeder went two for three with a double, two RBI, and scored twice. Claire Schroder drilled a double and drove in two runs. Zoey Kirchhoff polished off the day with eight RBIs, bringing her season total to 55, the third-highest in Class 3A.
The Trojans finish the regular season with a 26-12 record and host Red Oak on Thursday night. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. We will have the broadcast on 95.7 F.M. The pre-game show starts at 6:40.
