(Ames, IA) – Iowa State’s David Carr has earned the distinguished honor of being named the 2024 Big XII Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He is just the third Cyclone to earn the honor with the last being Kyven Gadson in 2015.
Carr was successful in the classroom with a 3.74 GPA while completing his master’s degree in education and graduating in May. He was also named the 2024 National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American, First Team Academic All-Big XII selection, and was on the Big XII Commissioner’s Honor Roll. While on the mat, he earned a 27-2 record this past season and won his second National Title to become the 17th wrestler in Iowa State history to win multiple titles. Carr is just the first since 2010 to earn multiple National Titles for Iowa State.
Just this season alone, the Cyclone had a 40:3 takedown ratio and registered 19 bonus-point wins while defeating a total of ten top-ten opponents. In his path to the National Title, Carr had wins over the #1, #2, and #5 seeds of the tournament. That also included four of his five opponents in the tournament finishing on the podium or earning All-American honors.
Carr pushed the Cyclones to their first Big XII team title since 2009 and also a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
