(Ankeny) Former Atlantic and University of Iowa Track Standout Jordan Mullen knows what it takes to win. During his high school days at Atlantic, Mullen, a Drake Relays and State Track Champion, took his talents to the University of Iowa, where he continued his winning ways, capturing two Big 10 Conference Titles and a two-time all-American. Mullen was hired as the Head Track Coach at Ankeny two years ago.
Mullen did not disappoint. In his first year as the Head Coach, Ankeny finished a close second to Johnston for the Class 4A State Title. The team responded with the Class 4A State Title this year, scoring 112 points.
Mullen, who builds his team around 400 runners, remembers a turning point one year ago when his 4×400 meter relay finished runner-up in 3:15.99 in the fastest 4×400 Meter Relay field combined in Iowa High School History. The eighth team finished in a time of 3:20.33.
The athletes fulfilled their promise with three immaculate days at this past spring’s Class 4A State Track Meet, winning the state title with a record-setting 112 points.
Coach Mullen was recently honored as USA Today Boys Coach of the Year and the Class 4A At-Large Coach of the Year. While it feels good to be recognized as a Head Coach, he gives all the credit to his athletes.
Coach Mullen says he loves being a coach, and coaching these kids will keep him young forever.
