(Missouri Valley, IA) The No. 10 ranked Audubon Wheelers (16-3) traveled to Missouri Valley to face the Lady Reds (17-4) in a pivotal Western Iowa Conference matchup. The Wheelers came into the game atop the WIC with a conference record of 10-1 and right behind them was Missouri Valley at 10-2.
The Wheelers came into the game fresh off a ranked win against I-35 Truro 2-1 in 15 innings sitting on a 12-game win streak. Missouri Valley came into the matchup with a five-game win streak and looking to win the conference.
The Wheelers came out hot with a double from Taryn Petersen and a home run the very next at-bat from Jordan Porsch giving the Wheelers a 2-0 lead. The Wheelers eventually added another run in the top of the fifth inning and held Missouri Valley scoreless with Riley Miller pitching all seven innings, allowing two hits with 13 strikeouts.
Head coach Andrea Schwery believes getting runs early was one of the keys to victory.
Schwery made a couple of changes in the batting order last night such as moving Petersen up to second and Porsch up to third. The move paid dividends as Wheelers found themselves ahead early and took full advantage of being on top.
The Wheelers find themselves at the top of the conference by two games and will likely win the conference with only a few games left and without a loss in the entire month of June.
Schwery believes the win streak comes from the loss on May 31 against Missouri Valley.
The Wheelers will face Logan-Magnolia tonight in Audubon starting at 5 with the time subject to change.
