(Council Bluffs, IA) – Southwestern Community College’s Chase Oates has been able to chase a victory in the steeplechase this weekend in the Region 11 Championships.
This victory comes after Oates shattered the school record in the 10,000-meter run just a day before. He was able to earn a time of 9:37.59 on Sunday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to earn the top victory while beating Iowa Western’s Flynn Pumpa who previously ran over 14 seconds faster than Oates. Scott Vicker, the director of cross country and track & field stated, “Coming back and running that well that soon after his 10K was an outstanding performance. I could not have asked for anything more out of Chase. He performed lights out in his two races. This should give him all the confidence in the world going into nationals.”
Oates demolished the previous 10,000-meter record at Southwestern from 2018 by a total of 74 seconds faster than the previous time. In the 10,000-meter, he was able to run a time of 33:04.08 just right behind Geofrey Ronoh and Barnabas Ndiwa of Iowa Western.
The Spartans will finish off their season next week at the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships which take place in Monroe, Lousiana.
