(Greenfield, IA)- With one meet under their spikes already this season, the Nodaway Valley Girls Track Team is off to a strong start. The Wolverines traveled to Woodward-Granger last Thursday, April 4th, for their first meet of the season after previous cancellations. It was a successful start to the season as Coach Brett Welsch saw some good times out of his girls, including a new personal record in the 100m Dash for junior Maddie Weston. The start was so successful, in fact, that Welsch is already looking ahead to fitting some pieces for the Blue Oval later this spring.
Now everyone knows that to be a good piece of a relay team you need to be fast but there are other qualities that Coach Welsch is looking for. He says many of the girls when talking to other area opponents discover the Wolverine practices are more difficult so Welsch is looking for those girls that have the toughness and the ability to get through the workouts looking strong then being able to recover. As long as the weather continues to stay fairly nice, the Nodaway Valley team, while usually known for their sprints, want to work their mid-distances more this season. However, when preparing some of these relay teams, the event schedule can throw a wrench in the plans.
Coach Welsch is also liking what he’s seeing from a trio of seniors for Nodaway Valley in Emma Lundy, Annika Nelson, and Jorja Holliday. Lundy is a mid-distance runner for the Wolverines who is set to run at Northwest Missouri State following her high school career while Holliday has qualified for the state tournament as a thrower the last two years and Nelson, a sprinter and hurdler, is currently nursing an injury from Thursday’s hurdle race.
Nodaway Valley girls return to the track on Tuesday, April 9th at 4:30pm as they travel to Earlham for an 11 team meet with the AC/GC Chargers.
