(Atlantic) The Atlantic girls’ soccer team is under the helm of first-year Head Coach. Jesse McCann, a Greenfield, Iowa native, takes over the reins from longtime Head Coach Dan Vargason, who resigned last spring to spend more time with his family. Coach Vargason continues to head the girl’s cross-country and varsity basketball programs in Atlantic.
McCann wrestled for four years at Northwestern College in Orange City and played soccer for two years for the Red Raiders. Coach McCann has been with the program as an assistant coach under Vargason for the past two years.
Fifteen to 18 girls showed up for preseason practice one week ago. McCann is looking for some sophomores to step it up this season.
McCann likes what he sees with the players returning this season. He says they are a good bunch of girls that want to win.
The Trojans must replace all-time leader Jada Jensen, who scored 73 goals in three seasons.
Defensively, Coach McCann is starting a new goalie, Katrina Williams.
The coach is looking to move Eva Steffensen to midfield, and Irelyn Gundy and Ella Brummer will also be on the offensive end.
The Trojans travel to Indianola for a scrimmage on Thursday.
