(Harlan, IA) – Today’s weather may not make it feel like golf season is coming up, but it surely is as the Harlan girl’s golf team is getting ready to hit the greens this season. Head Coach Todd Bladt is getting his girls ready by hitting the driving range and working specifically on the short game.
Harlan returns three big names this season including Ella Freund, Kara Kenkel, and Macy Mueller who were three of the top golfers last season. All three golfers shot under 62 on average per nine holes last year with some impressive shots down the line as they’ll continue to drive for improvement.
Coach Bladt is looking for the little improvements this season for his girls. Some days are better than others for golfers as some days you are hitting right on the fairway and other days, it’s going the exact opposite direction of the hole.
The drills that the Cyclones have been working on so far are utilizing the short golf game to push forward. Most times, you can get on with a good drive and can struggle in the short game. Ben Hogan said it best, “Golf is not a game of good shots, it’s a game of bad shots.” Harlan is looking to eliminate their bad shots with their 50-yard drills to be able to get on the green and limit errors along the way.
Golf is a mental game. You need to be able to take a course hole by hole rather than worrying about what’s next for you on the course. The Cyclones utilize this in their game, advancing on and pushing forward rather than focusing on what they did just a few holes ago.
Harlan will wait for the rainy weather to push away before they head back outside on the greens to prepare for their season which begins in early April.
