(Tulsa, OK)- A record setting weekend for the Cyclones as they take home their first Big 12 team title since 2009 as they have two wrestlers sitting alone atop the podium. Anthony Echemendia would be the first to claim the title as he defeated UNI’s Cael Happel for his first championship finish. Yonger Bastida would be the second Cyclone to earn a title with a 10-7 decision victory at heavyweight over Air Force’s Wyatt Henrickson.
They wouldn’t be the only ISU wrestlers who made the championship bouts as three others would come up short and take home second place: Evan Frost, Cody Chittum, and David Carr. Frost was unable to dethrone the 4x champ at 133lbs of Daton Fix from Oklahoma State while Chittum is defeated by tiebreaker. Carr got himself a rematch with Mizzou’s Keegan O’Toole but was unabel to get avenge his previous loss.
Iowa State finishes with 152.5 team points to claim for the program’s 17th team title with an 11 point lead over second place Oklahoma State. The Cyclones’ 152.5 points would be fourth most for the tournament and most for an ISU team in the Big 12.
Head coach Kevin Dresser would also pick up his second Big 12 Coach of the Year award of his seven year career coaching the Cyclones.
