(Undated) Automated License Plate Reader cameras are becoming more popular in Iowa. ALPR cameras scan license plates, which are then run through police databases to look for reports of stolen cars, arrest warrants, and missing people. While the cameras can help law enforcement, there are privacy concerns. The ACLU made a model department policy that wipes away data on scanned license plates after a week of being scanned. These cameras have been installed in Cedar Rapids, the University of Iowa campus, and will be in Marshalltown next year.
