(Atlantic) With winter right around the corner, that means the start of new sports seasons at Atlantic, including the boy’s swim team. This will be the first year of coach and former swimmer for the Trojans, Cody McCreedy. McCreedy was a member of the Atlantic swim team from the 2014-15 season through the 2017-18 season and was a top 150 swimmer in his two freestyle events. The swim team is different from other athletic teams at the school because they are the only self-funded team at Atlantic, and the swim team is actually a combination of swimmers from multiple area schools, including Clarinda, Atlantic, and Riverside. Coach McCreedy is taking over the boy’s swim team that is returning every member from the 2022-23 season. While the team had no state meet qualifiers last season, McCreedy says returning every swimmer gives the team an advantage this season.
McCreedy has high goals for this season, such as getting better times out of his swimmers, especially when he doesn’t have to mess with any of the relays from last year and can focus on improving. Outside the pool, he wants the team to focus on increasing their academics and work inside the classroom while also looking to add new teammates to the squad from area schools. He also says that this year, he wants to see the competition improve against bigger schools that they face in meets such as Waukee and Ames.
Although he has only been working with some of the kids briefly, he knows swimmers from his time on the team and from living in the area. He has been encouraged by what he’s seen from his team so far.
The Atlantic boys swim team will get just under a month to work on getting the yards in and improving their times before their first meet at the Boone Invitational at Boone High School on December 2nd.
