(Clarinda, IA) – Clarinda continues their win streak into week eight after their 50-14 win over Chariton in week seven. The Cardinals have now won three straight games as they have continued to rely on the passing game and close out the box on defense. Coach Hanafan is proud of the offensive efficiency these last few weeks and looks to continue with that efficiency this week.
The running game has continued to be the big key success for the Cardinals, especially in their last game against Chariton. Dominick Posley rushed for a total of 170 yards and even had two touchdowns to add to the board. Posley has averaged 123 yards per game as he had over 800 yards rushing this season. He did not do it alone as Karson Downey came to his aid and added 138 yards and two touchdowns in the game as well. This combination is just one element of the Cardinals’ success this season.
The other element of success for Clarinda has been their defense. They have continued to limit the running game of opponents this season. Last week, Clarinda limited Chariton to just 77 yards rushing and only 14 total points. Coach Hanafan has not only been proud of the players on the field but also thanks his coaching staff for the level of effort that they have put into the defense this season.
While Clarinda won the game overall, the Cardinals started off in the first quarter with a 22-point lead. Although they were able to hang through, the Cardinals allowed Chariton to score and only added on eight in the second quarter. The level of focus was not all-in for Clarinda, something they are working to improve in week eight.
This week, Clarinda will be taking on Centerville which just recently lost to Van Meter 63-6. The Big Reds are led by Landon McGrann in both the running and passing game on offense. McGrann is 50% this season in the passing game with 877 yards and eight touchdowns. He also has rushed for 769 yards and nine touchdowns as he accounts for 75% of the team’s rushing touchdowns this season. Coach Hanafan knows that the quarterback is talented, but has the confidence in his defense to know that they will put a stop to McGrann’s rushing game.
Clarinda hosts Centerville on Friday night with a kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
