(Atlantic) Winterset downed Atlantic 21-0 in a non-district football game at Atlantic on Friday.
On Winterset’s opening drive, quarterback Hunter Lyon fired a missile to Jaydn Cooper deep in Atlantic territory. Fullback Ben Porter punched it in from the three-yard line on the ensuing play. The extra point went wide, and The Huskies led 6-0. The Trojans’ defense came to life and stopped the visitor’s offense on three consecutive drives, but a miss-handled pitch play by the Trojans landed in the end zone, and the Huskies tacked two more points on the board with a safety. The second quarter went scoreless, and Winterset held on to an 8-0 lead at the break.
The Trojans offense gained some traction in the third quarter when the ball came loose on a fumble, and Winterset recovered it. Tailback Hank Wilmes capitalized on a 35-touchdown run. The extra point went through, and Winterset cushioned their lead to 15-0.
The balance of the game became a defensive battle. Zac Mortvedt picked off a pass and raced to the end zone with 1:34 remaining. The extra point failed, and Winterset traveled home with a 21-0 win in their pocket.
Huskies Quarterback Hunter Lyon completed 6 of 11 passes for 109 yards. Hank Wilmes led the team in rushing yards on 16 carries for 80 yards. Jayden Cooper caught two passes for 51 yards.
Atlantic quarterback Zayden Parker was 11-22 passing for 94 yards. Dante Hedrington was the leading rusher with 11 carries for 53 yards.
District play begins next week for both squads. Atlantic heads to Knoxville for a Class 3A District 6 opener. Winterset, playing in the 4A league, opens district action at Norwalk.
