(Des Moines, IA) — Police departments across the state are reminding people to not call 911 to report illegal firework displays. Instead, residents should call non-emergency lines. Police are asking residents to keep 911 lines open for priority emergencies. Law enforcement is also asking people who choose to use fireworks to consider veterans with military-related post-traumatic stress disorder. In a Facebook post, Des Moines police said “hearing the booms and feeling the shockwaves from the fireworks can activate unpleasant memories from the past, prompting intense anxiety and fear.”
