(Denison) Atlantic overcame a 5-2 deficit and topped Denison-Schleswig 9-5 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference softball game at Denison on Thursday night.
The Trojans scored one run in the top of the first inning; the Monarchs rallied with two runs in the bottom of the frame to hold a 2-1 edge through the first three innings. Atlantic plated a run in the top of the third to tie the contest. However, the Monarchs answered with three runs in their side of the third, for a 5-2 cushion.
Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann says his team didn’t panic, scoring two runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth, and held on for the 9-5 victory.
Lila Wiederstein led the Trojans at the plate with three hits, including two doubles and one RBI. Zoey Kirchhoff went two for four, including a two-run homer and four RBI. The Trojans scored nine runs on 13 hits.
Riley Wood picked up the win for the visitors allowing five runs on six hits, three earned, one walk, and two strikeouts in five innings of work. Zoey Kirchhoff earned the save allowing no runs on no hits while striking out two Monarch hitters in the game’s final two innings.
The Monarchs scored five runs on seven hits. Kaitlyn Bruhn and Norah Huebert led the home team with two hits each.
