(Audubon) JEO Consulting is expected to present to the Audubon City Council on Monday.
The report will reveal options for expanding the wastewater treatment plant. JEO was hired to come up with a way for the city’s plant to handle the industrial capacity wastewater from Waspy’s.
“Waspy’s is an industrial compliance user for the city, meaning that if you produce so much waste you fall into that category and you have to apply to be on the city’s permit to be on the waste. What’s happening is the calculations were short and they are bringing in more than the pant can take in.”
City Clerk Joe Foran admits there are multiple ways to combat the issue. “Either through a TIF program to help Waspy’s put in a pre-treatment or the second option would be, which we went ahead and did the first step of, which was hire JEO to look over the plant and give a suggestion of where we can increase capacity and what that estimated cost is going to be.”
Foran comments on the City’s motivation to help accommodate Waspy’s. “The city always wants to help out our businesses and have a good relationship with them. Right now both the plant and Waspy’s are in violation of Iowa DNR requirements. We want to work with them and come up with a solution that is the best solution we can for everybody involved.”
Foran says there have been no penalties handed down by the Iowa DNR, but a lot of violation letters have been sent.
