(Elk Horn) Exira-EHK boys and girls golf has several newcomers to the team this spring.
The boys squad has a few holdovers from last season. They’ll be led by Trey Petersen who fired a 40 at the team’s season opening meet on Tuesday in Avoca. “Trey Petersen comes back. He had the lowest round average last year. Derrek Kommes, Gavin Bengard, and Easton Nelson all played varsity golf a year ago. Those guys have the experience, so obviously we are going to be leaning on them quite a bit.”
That’s head coach Tom Petersen’s whose roster will be rounded out by a lot of youth. “We have quite a few newcomers. A lot of freshmen that are out for the first time. It’s going to take them quite a bit of time to understand everything that goes into it. A lot of them came out because they had never played it before. I think that’s awesome, but they are going to get the opportunity eventually to participate in some of those meets.”
Shay Burmeister is the lone returner for the Exira-EHK girls. She medaled with a round of 56 on Tuesday. “We only have four that are out and Shay Burmeister is the one that’s returning from a year ago and then we have some inexperienced girls also. It’s a good time for these kids to learn.”
Exira-EHK will be back in action on Monday with the boys at Woodbine and girls at Boyer Valley.
