(Harlan) On Tuesday night, the Harlan City Council voted to enter into a 28E agreement with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Under the plan, the Sheriff’s Office would expand from 11 to 17 deputies. The current Police Officers would need to apply for the positions.
One Harlan Citizen held a petition with 250 signatures against the unification agreement.
Harlan Mayor Jay Christensen says the issue here is trying to hire and retain a police force.
The mayor says option two is to enter the 28E agreement because there isn’t a third option.
The Shelby County Board of Supervisors must vote on the agreement to make it official.
The Harlan City Council also approved a proposal from Snyder and Associates to review the North 4th Street Bridge evaluation, structure study, and replacement option.
The Council set April 4 for a public hearing for considering the maximum tax dollars from certain levies for the City’s proposed Fiscal Year 2023-2024 budget.
The Council also passed the third and final reading of an amended parking ordinance for no parking on the east side of 19th Street, between Durant and Willow Streets, between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday during the school calendar year.
