(Washington D.C.) Iowa U.S. Senator Joni Ernst honored Sarah Root and highlighted her renewed effort, Sarah’s Law, which would bring justice to families like the Roots.
Senator Ernst says Sarah, a 21-year-old from Council Bluffs, Iowa, was struck and killed by an illegal immigrant driving drunk – three times over the legal limit.
Ernst says because of a loophole in federal law, Sarah’s killer has never faced justice.
The Republican Senator is trying to close that loophole. She says the Federal Government should require that someone who is an illegal immigrant and has seriously injured or killed another person be detained so that the families of the fallen can seek justice.
