(Guthrie Center) The 68th Annual John J. Harris Wrestling Tournament takes place Friday and Saturday in Corning.
ACGC will be among the 28 teams in the field. Charger coach Lane Rumelhart is optimistic about what his team can accomplish. “We have high expectations. We are bringing 13 guys and that’s the most we’ve had in the lineup all year. We finally got Michael Fuller down to 195. We are looking forward to having as close to a full lineup as we possible could. Hopefully we’ll be toward that top tier, top third in the team running.”
A few individuals appear poised for a strong showing. Among those are Tegan Slaybaugh, Gavin Sloss, and Payton Jacobe. “Tegan I think will either be a 2 or a 3 seed. We lost to the Creston kid. Tegan definitely wants to face that Creston guy again and if he wants to do that it’s probably going to have to make the finals.” Rumelhart says, “At 126 it’s kind of wide open. Red Oak has a solid kid, but I’d look for Gavin Sloss to make a run. He’s really coming on at the end of the season. He’s making less mistakes and being aggressive.” Rumelhart adds, “At 285 there’s us (Payton Jacobe), there’s again a Creston guy that we beat 6-5 earlier in the year and then Trent Warner from Nodaway Valley/O-M that has gotten us a couple of times in a couple of close matches.”
KSOM and KS95.7 FM will have reports from the early rounds of the tournament. KS95.7 FM and WesternIowaToday.com will provide live play-by-play and video of the finals on Saturday afternoon.
