(Elk Horn) The Exira-EHK girls basketball team improved to 13-2 on the season with Friday’s 62-39 home victory against CAM.
The Spartans jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the game’s first few minutes and never trailed. CAM’s best stretch of the game came late in the 1st quarter when they scored six straight points to close within 17-12. Quinn Grubbs (3) and Shay Burmeister (2) combined for five of the Spartan’s six 3-pointers in the 1st half. With 12 points from Burmeister and 11 from Grubbs at the break, the Spartans led 35-21.
CAM got within 12 points early in the 2nd half, but the Cougars never flipped their opponent’s early momentum. Exira-EHK’s 2-3 zone defense did a good job of limiting touches for some of CAM’s key personnel. Makenzie Riley scored 11 of her 16 points after halftime. Riley also had a big night on the boards and used her length to deflect several post entry passes.
Exira-EHK pulled away with a 15-10 3rd quarter advantage and outscored CAM 12-8 in the 4th. Kiera Nichols led the visitors with 15 points. Meredith Rich made four 3-pointers and scored 13.
Thanks to a Coon Rapids-Bayard upset of #6 Woodbine on Friday night, the Spartans are tied for first in the Rolling Valley Conference. CAM drops to 10-5 on the season.
