(Atlantic) It’s been one year since the passing of a former Atlantic and Iowa State University student. 20-year-old Avery Andersen passed away in a car accident near his home in Atlantic, Iowa. He was known to all as a joyful, loving, and enthusiastic young man. Only a few short months after his accident, his family began the process of starting a foundation
Sue Andersen is the mother of Avery and president of the Foundation Board.
The Avery Anderson Foundation mission is to encourage the study of arts and sciences by rewarding people who devote themselves to both. Avery had a wide range of interests and created great relationships with everyone along the way. The foundation aims to celebrate Avery’s legacy through rewarding individuals who make the same impact Avery once did.
Three scholarships are awarded to students through the Foundation. The first scholarship given through the foundation is the Avery Andersen Friend in Meteorology Award.
On November 29, Steve and Sue Andersen presented the first annual award to Iowa State Student Marissa Osterloh.
The Foundation also awards two other scholarships: The All in Award and The Beta Sigma Psi Award.
The All In Award is presented to an Atlantic High School Senior who is engaged in activities in the school system and the community. It is designed to celebrate students who contribute to school, community, and church with passion and enthusiasm.
The Beta Sigma Psi Spirit Award is a $1000 scholarship awarded to a Beta Sigma Psi Epsilon Chapter member at Iowa State University. Avery always displayed love for his brothers and enthusiasm for life, and this award is designed to celebrate that.
Sue says in the future, the foundation plans to organize fundraising events.
Sue would like to thank the community for their support. The Avery Andersen foundation is led by an all volunteer board and nearly 100% of donations are used to fund scholarships and awards. For more information, please visit their website at www.averyandersenfoundation.org
