(Atlantic) Winter weather is set to hit part of southwest Iowa today.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District 4 Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy provided her top ten Winter Driving Tips.
#10: No Cruise Control.
#9: If possible, always avoid stopping when you are going uphill when the roads are snow or ice covered because you lose momentum and traction and could possibly slide backwards.
#8: You must increase your following distance by at least ten feet when the roads are not in ideal condition to give yourself more opportunity to stop.
#7: Accelerate and decelerate slowly.
#6: Have an Emergency Preparedness Kit.
#5: Know what the winter weather advisories and warnings mean.
Of course, if there is a Blizzard Warning do not go anywhere!
#4: Don’t be fooled by what you see. The road conditions can look really good when in fact they are not.
#3: If you slide, make sure you steer in the direction of the slide.
#2: Stay home if you can.
#1: Slow Down. Trooper McCreedy said the majority of issues that motorists run into is they’re driving too fast for conditions.
