(Guthrie Center) ACGC faces Treynor on Friday in a Class 1A first round playoff matchup.
The Chargers are 6-2 on the year with the Cardinals coming in at 5-3. “Treynor is a great team. Heck, all of the teams left in the final 32 are good.” ACGC coach Cody Matthewson says, “Everybody earned the opportunity to be here. They have three losses on the season all from quality teams. Treynor is a program that’s been around success for a long time. They always have a lot of really good athletes.”
It’s no secret that coach Cody Matthewson’s team will look to establish the run. “For us the big thing is being able to limit the turnovers, be disciplined, and be able to get ahead of the sticks on first down. Just keep plugging away. We have to be okay with 3-4 yards and not always be anticipating a big play.”
He points out Treynor is athletic and they are able to use their depth to their advantage. “They have good athletes and they have a deep roster. They don’t have a lot of two way players. They are able to stay fresh.”
ACGC’s six game win streak was snapped last week with a 54-0 setback against defending state champ Van Meter. “There’s a lot of good things that we did. I’m really proud of the way our guys fought. We were able to get some younger guys a lot of reps. Guys stepped up and did some good things. Those guys are going to get more opportunities.”
ACGC has raised the standard in their program over the past few years and a big feather in their cap came last year when they won a pair of playoff games. “For us to be 6-2 and be hosting a home playoff game, I’m pretty pleased with it. I don’t think we are pleased with where we are at right now. We are not going to be pleased with bowing out right away.”
The Chargers have 2,604 rushing yards this season. South Hamilton is the only Class 1A program with more.
