(Atlantic) Motorists could face steep fines if found in violation of the school bus safety law. Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District #4 Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy says the penalties range from #345.00 to $945.00 and a possible 30-day license suspension.
Trooper McCreedy says the law changed in 2012 and named Kayden’s law; passed after a truck struck and killed seven-year-old Kayden Halverson of Northwood, Iowa, while crossing the street after exiting the school bus.

Trooper McCreedy, so for multiple-lane roadways, it is the lane plus one. Vehicles must stop if traveling directly behind the bus or the road next to the school bus. Oncoming traffic does not need to stop when one additional lane between the bus and the oncoming vehicle is traveling in.
