(Shelby) The Carsten Farm Days have displayed farm history for 40 years when the event opens this weekend. The 1880 Farmstead, Inc. is a non-profit group of local volunteers overseeing an 80-acre working farm museum between Minden and Shelby in Pottawattamie County. The farm is on the list of the National Register of Historic Places.
Carsten Farms Board Member Terry Torneten says this all started when the owners donated the farm to Pottawattamie County 40 years ago. He says a group of neighbors interested in antiques, old tractors, and equipment conducted the first show together in 1982.
The two-day event features steam engines powering antique threshing machines, antique cars, trucks, and machinery, a parade, crafts, and entertainment.
Over two hundred restored antique tractors will be displayed; the original Carstens Farm Buildings will open with demonstrations bringing back memories for the older visitors and valuable teaching history lessons for the young.
Admission to this year’s event is $5.00 per day for everyone nine years and older.
The annual starts today, and runs through Sunday.
