(Atlantic) The Cass County Fair 4-H and FFA Meat and Dairy Goat Show start at 11:00 a.m. this morning. Superintendent Chris Scholl said six years ago, the Meat Goat entries ranged from 25-to-30 head, and today the entries are pushing close to 100.
“The Meat Goat Show in Cass County has exploded,” said Scholl. “This year, we have 91 meat and breeding does, and our Dairy Show went from one to eight.
“This project works well for some of the younger youth, for families living on acreages,” said Scholl. “They don’t take a lot of feed and don’t get big, making it easier for the younger exhibitors to handle.”
Scholl says goats are unique. The Judge is looking for a couple of different things on the animal. “The loin down the back and the rump; the two best cuts of the boar goat,” said Scholl. “The Judge is looking for the structure on the Dairy exhibits. The market goats are shown like a lamb braced up, and the breeding does are shown like a market heifer without a show stick.”
Scholl says considering everything going on in the last couple of years, he is “happy with the numbers.”
The Show starts this morning at 11:00, starting with the 4H market goats, followed by the 4H breeding show and FFA exhibitors. After that, the Judge will select the Supreme Market animal representing Cass County at the Best of the West shoot-out in Denison.
